Somiedo is a living park: its villages keep their traditional architecture — the broom-thatched teito roofs are its hallmark — and rural accommodation is the natural way to experience it. Sleeping in the park means waking among the mists, listening to the stream and reaching the viewpoint before the sun touches the slope.
Where to stay: the advantages of each area
Pola de Somiedo is the services base: restaurants, the supermarket and most guided outings start from here. For the pure bear watcher, the park’s higher villages — Valle de Lago, La Peral or Veiga de Cima — shorten the road to the best slopes and reward you with the most spectacular dawns.
If you want total silence, the braña settlements (Endriga, El Villar de Vildas) are a safe bet, although with fewer services: plan your meals.
- First visit: Pola de Somiedo: services, guides and trails on your doorstep.
- Bear obsession: Valle de Lago or La Peral: first at the viewpoint, last to leave.
- As a family: the lower villages, with meadows and easy trails along the river.
What to ask when booking
Always ask about breakfast: many rural places in Somiedo now offer an “observer’s breakfast” before 7:00. Also confirm car access (some high villages have narrow roads) and the pet policy if you travel with a dog — remember that dogs must be kept on a lead in the park.
